Waltham. Solid 14 karat white gold Art Deco survivor. You are looking at the quintessential Art Deco watch. The stepped case speaks softly with incredible architectural lines. I love the look. 17 jewels. This watch is a real catch. if you are looking for an extraordinary gift, this checks all the boxes.

Art Deco, if you have followed my watch offerings at all during the last year you will know that my favorite sweet spot is Art Deco. What is Art Deco? Art Deco, also called style moderne, movement in the decorative arts and architecture that originated in the 1920s and developed into a major style in western Europe and the United States during the 1930s. Its name was derived from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925.

This “Stepped” case is so reflective if the design of the Art Deco period. This case is in sublime condition. This of the Chrysler Building in New York! The simple stick markers on the dial give it an elegant understaed appearance. Wrist watches were entering their second decade of existence, what a way to bring in the “New” social symbol, the wrist watch.

How does that affect the wrist watch era. Remember that wrist watches were approximately 10-15 years young when the Art Deco period fell into the arts and design. This watch is a classic example of that period. This Waltham movement was born in 1934, it is a higher caliber 17 jewel “Ruby” movement, and this was part of the famous “Jeweled series that Waltham introduced.

This watch has gone through an extensive restoration. It started with the case, it was cleaned and hand polished to remove the fine scratches and keep the stepped detail on the case. I had a NOS crystal custom fitted to finish out the exterior.

I sent the dial and hands to one of the oldest dial refinishing companies in the country, they have some of the original print dies to most early American watches. They dial is silver with gold foil ( reflective) shadow box numbers.

I had the movement serviced, it was taken apart, all parts cleaned and lubricated and a new main spring installed. It runs beautifully for a watch that is 100+ years young

One of my perfectionist traits in vintage watches is to look for pristine cases. When I do that, I probably turn down 60-70% of all cases due to case wear, damaged hinges, abuse, corrosion and hard ownership. What I get is a mint case with a potential to be a real treasure when completed, just like this one. Think about this, the crisp stepped case is solid gold and yet it maintained its crisp stepped case design. There is a story about respect, this was was shown great respect throughout the past.

I have to tell you what the market is paying for vintage watches reveal many stories. If you are an avid researcher you will notice sellers offering cases that are badly worn with refinished dials and hands and asking a handsome price for them. If the seller fully disclosed this, I would feel better, most don’t. For me, I try hard to avoid them.

This case measures a robust 26.00MM wide

    It measures with lugs 35.00MM

I have finished off this treasure with a black band with a stainless-steel buckle

Don’t miss this one. I worked hard on this. It took me 7 months to do this. I saw the potential. It really is one of my favorites in a long time.

This is a pristine restoration. It will be hard to believe that this watch is not new, it really is 100 years young. Let’s put vintage watches into perspective. They are not moisture resistant like their modern counterparts. They are not as accurate as an inexpensive quartz (battery) watch today. This is art on the wrist, I have preserved a slice of horological history for someone to enjoy.
