A professional note of pride from Vintage Watch Corner. My watch shop was selected by a significant motion picture studio to supply vintage watches for a major motion picture be filmed as we speak. It is a movies that takes place between 1918 and 1926, some of my personal watches and a few active Etsy listings are being used in the filming.
Let me tease you! I am offering a Art Deco (notice the stepped bezel, so art deco in styling). This watch is a true survivor, the fact that is has survived the typical premature case wear that is so prevalent in today’s 1920-1930’s watches. Let me formally introduce you to “The Hamilton Nelson”
The 1935 Nelson was one of the first wrist watches to feature the 14/0 sized, 17 jewel 980 movement. It was produced for only two years.
Three different dials were available, an AGN dial, and applied gold marker dial, and an inlaid enamel dial.
These early 14/0 watches are a little small, or better said, a little narrow, compared to the 6/0 sized watches from the same period, which are wider and present themselves as larger. By today's standards I think these early watches are just as wearable by women as they are by men.
This Art Deco, this era is one of my favorite, The wrist was just starting to gain foothold socially and American watch companies were taking greater risks in the design of their wrist watches for me.
The watch has gone through an extensive restoration:
NOS crystal
New mainspring
NOS Hamilton Hands
Dial refinish (love those raised gold numbers)
Case was gently hand polished to prevent premature wear
The case measures:
22MM across
38.50 lug to lug
The case is beautifully engraved P.P.F (The case for accuracy has a few rub spots on the corners, I mention this for full transparency
Complete teardown service from one of the most respected vintage Hamilton restoration houses in the USA, I pay for their expertise, but this way I get genuine NOS Hamilton parts installed.
This is a stunning survivor, to its beautifully formed horizontal case lines, to its applied gold numeral dial; it is the epitome of Art Deco.
Founded in Lancaster, PA in 1892, the Hamilton Watch Company has been producing quality timepieces for well over a century. Over the years, the company’s craftsmanship has never wavered, and they continue to present new ideas of what a wristwatch can be. Offering sharp, sophisticated designs and accurate timekeeping, each Hamilton watch boasts a classic look combined with cutting-edge technology.
A timeline of innovation:
1928: After the Yankees won the World Series, the Hamilton Watch Company announced the Yankee watch, establishing it as a pioneer in watch design. The brand helped America keep up with the energy of a new lifestyle. Cutting-edge Hamilton designs, including the Yankee and the Piping Rock, symbolized the independent spirit of the day.
1930: Hamilton watches continued to embody the soaring spirit of the ‘30s, as the world turned its attention to the skies with the start of commercial aviation. Soon after, Hamilton was named the official timepiece of popular industry leaders, including Eastern, TWC and Northwest. After Hamilton's first run of "geometric" wrist watches (the Square, the Barrel, the Rectangular, etc) many of the models began to take on men's names. This was a common practice up until the 1950's, when marketing introduced other model names related to the automatics and electrics. The electrics got "cool names" like "Everest" and "Altair" and the automatics got rather dull names, like K-401.
